Promises and Claims

An interesting thing, many people tend to say or promise things that they may not be able to fulfill, which is pretty lame. What's the point of saying something that you can't live up to? It is not when someone can't fulfill something that bothers me, it is when someone doesn't take responsibility for their words.

Words usually imply a promise or claim. Whether it is telling a friend, "I will help you out," or "Hey I will take a bullet for you," or even "I love you," it is a promise in its own way.

An example, to elucidate the matters, I hear my friends frequently say, "I will take a bullet for you!" Well it is great to know that someone says he/she will, but that is a false promise because all humans are selfish to the extent at which they prefer to protect themselves. No I am not being cynical, I am being realistic. In addition, it is retarded to take a bullet for someone because if your timing is off, you may either be too early or too late, resulting in a failed attempt. It is better to tackle them so both of you are safe for that moment. I tell my friends, "I will try my best to protect you." I use this statement instead of the other because this one is not set, I am not sure if I will be able to take that bullet or chicken out during the gun pointing. In a sense, it is basically not promising anything. I am being honest. I am not going to make an open-ended statement, in essence, lie to you

Another example, I am afraid to say, "I love you," to people other than family. Why? Well, who the hell can honestly say what love is, especially at this age? Though I am convinced that I do love them inside, I won't say so, because I am not entirely sure that it is real. There is no reason to make a claim that I , in a way, cannot prove.

Every word said has an implication to it, and it is ideal for people to take responsibility for what they say. This is why I choose my words with care nowadays to ensure I am truthful to everyone and to myself.
